Can you help me decide on a baseball park to visit next season?
Hi everyone,
So I know that it’s a bit early to be planning a trip for next season, but why the heck not. I have a free flight to use through Southwest by August of 2009, and I am looking for a ballpark to visit sometime over the summer. I need some tips as to which one to go to next. Here’s where I have already visited (so they are out):
-Wrigley Field (Cubs)
-New Busch Stadium (Cardinals)
-Miller Park (Brewers)
-PNC Park (Pirates)
-Great American Ballpark (Reds)
-Kauffman Stadium (Royals)
-Turner Field (Braves)
-US Cellular (White Sox)
-Jacob Field (Indians)
-Angel Stadium (Angels)
-Yankee Stadium (Yankees)
-Shea Stadium (Mets)
Here are some things to keep in mind:
-I’m 22 and young so I think it’s fun to go to these places and come right back home. Not really sure how much longer I will be doing that, but for now, almost all over the parks I’ve been to have been completely spontaneous road trips that involved me and a couple friends driving out to the park and driving right back after the game.
-I live in Chicago, so I don’t know if I would want to use a free flight on locations such as Detroit or Minneapolis.
-I understand that the Twins will be playing their final season in the Metrodome this season, so is it worth it to go out there and see a game in the dome, or should I just wait to get out there for their new stadium?
-I know the Yankees and Mets are both opening brand new stadiums. I don’t really care to see those for quite a while as I have not had the best experience in New York and need to take a break. Also, I am sure those new parks will be around for quite a while, so I should see other cities before these ones again.
-It doesn’t matter if the Cubs are the opponent… I’ll usually go and root for the home team anyway because I’m not a big fan of loud and obnoxious visiting fans at Wrigley Field, so I try avoid that at all costs. I feel like it gives a better ballpark experience to be rooting along with the home fans too (the only parks I visited when the Cubs were the opponent were: Turner Field, Miller Park, Great American Ballpark and Busch Stadium… but the Cubs fans had outnumbered the home fans anyway).
-I usually take about two trips a summer to different places (ie: Atlanta and New York Mets last summer), and I do have this free flight to use, so a west coast location might be the best to use the flight on, while I could just drive or bus to a midwest location.
-What are people’s thoughts on places like Chase Field and Coors Field? Are they worth getting out to see right away, or do you think they can wait?
-I am also cheap, so if I go to a Fenway Park, what is your advice for good times to get tickets (ie: April/May? Day games?).
I am sure that some of you readers have made your way around the various ballparks, so I would be happy to hear from your own experiences. Whatever advice you could offer would be great. Thanks for your help!

Safeco Field in Seattle is beautiful. Too bad you have to watch the Mariners play there.
How about AT&T park - The SF giants. I’m not a baseball fan but I go to games just to hang out at the park. Fantastic eats and alot of fun.

Check it out!
yeah.. I am definitely looking at AT&T Park as I have heard it’s really nice.
Safeco is one of those parks that I always forget about. While the team isn’t too exciting right now, I hear their fans are great and it is a beautiful park.
Thanks guys for your suggestions. To everyone else, feel free to keep sending more ideas!
Coors Field in Denver is killer. Beautiful park, smaller size, and it’s right in Downtown Denver, where there are about 90 bars within stumbling distance.
Come and see a Lincecum game at AT&T! Perhaps the best park in baseball to watch a game at!
Find a double-up trip. Me and a buddy did Baltimore-D.C. on consecutive days last year and loved it. Southwest into Baltimore, easy rail to Camden, easy rail to DC and the Nats. Great trip.
thanks again everyone for all the ideas. These are all really great and now I am not sure which one I want to go to! Sharpstick- thanks for the reminder about Camden Yards and New Nationals ballpark. I almost saw Camden a couple summers ago, but my friends thought it was too crazy, even for me, with the time frame I was providing them with. Wow, there’s so many great places to see.
